Winter is for Reflection, Not Reinvention
It’s December.
The month of mulled wine, twinkling lights, and… relentless pressure to overhaul your entire life before January 1st.
Apparently it's...‘New Year, New You!’
‘Set those goals now, or you’ll fall behind!’
It’s exhausting, isn’t it?
And, frankly, it’s bollocks.
New Year’s resolutions for business owners (and to be fair pretty much anyone) are a load of over-hyped nonsense designed to make us feel like we’re broken and need fixing.
But you’re not broken. You’re human. And humans, like nature, have seasons.
I’ve discussed the cycle of creativity and business as it relates to human nature in a previous blog post, but now I want to look at how we plan for the year ahead without getting caught up in ‘New Year, New Me’ vibes.
Instead, I like to think of the end of the year as the best time for reflection.
So let’s dive into how to use the quiet moments between the rush of Christmas and the chaotic New Year to set your business up for an incredible 2025.
Winter: A Time for Rest and Reflection
Take a look outside.
Trees aren’t frantically trying to grow new leaves. Animals aren’t sprinting around building empires.
The world is slowing down, going inward, and conserving energy.
And guess what?
That’s what you’re meant to be doing, too.
Winter is a season of reflection. It’s a time to look back on the year just gone—what worked, what didn’t, what brought joy, and what drained you dry.
It’s about asking the important questions:
What felt good this year?
What didn’t serve me?
What do I want to carry forward into the new year?
There’s no rush. No frantic energy. Just a gentle nudge to pause, sip your tea (or wine, no judgment), and reflect.
Spring: When the Energy Returns
Here’s where the seasonal magic kicks in.
Spring, NOT January 1st, is the natural time for new beginnings.
The days grow longer, the energy shifts and the world literally wakes up.
This is when plans take root and grow.
This is when you feel that spark to try something new or set goals—not because the calendar says so, but because you’re ready.
So instead of making grand, unrealistic resolutions now, take the winter to plan and dream.
Then, when spring arrives, you can take action with energy and purpose.
Why Every Day Is a Chance to Start Fresh
Another reason resolutions are bollocks?
They assume you only get one shot at change each year.
Miss the January boat? Tough luck.
But life doesn’t work like that. Every single day—hell, every single moment—is a chance to start fresh.
Want to learn a new skill? Start today.
Need to prioritise your health? Begin with lunch, not Monday.
Thinking about a big life change? Reflect now, and take a baby step tomorrow.
You don’t need a new calendar to permit you to make a change.
You already have everything you need to begin—whenever the hell you want.
Ditch the Guilt (alongside New Year's Resolutions) and Follow Your Rhythm
The problem with New Year’s resolutions is that they’re so often rooted in guilt.
Lose weight.
Work harder.
Be better.
It’s like we’re supposed to hate ourselves into improvement.
F**k that.
This winter, I challenge you to tune out the noise of “goal-setting gurus” and instead tune into yourself.
Reflect on what truly matters to you—not society, not Instagram, not your neighbour who’s just signed up for a triathlon.
Use this season to rest, dream, and plan.
And if you don’t feel like making big changes in January? Good.
You’re not meant to.
How to Reflect and Plan Without the Pressure (or switching up New Year's resolutions for business owners)...
Write It Down
Take a moment to journal about the past year. What brought you joy? What drained your energy? What do you want more of next year?
Set Seasonal Intentions
Instead of rigid resolutions, think about the seasons. Winter for reflection. Spring for growth. Summer for action. Autumn for harvest. What feels right for each phase?
Be Kind to Yourself
You don’t have to change everything overnight. Start small, stay consistent, and celebrate every tiny win.
Listen to Your Inner Voice
Block out the noise of social media and focus on what feels good to you. (And unfollow anyone who makes you feel crap about yourself.)
What Can You Take Off Your Plate in the New Year?
As you reflect on the past year and look ahead to the next, here’s a question to sit with:
What’s taking up too much of your time and energy?
We all have tasks that drain us—the ones we dread but keep doing because they’re important.
And sure, they might be necessary, but are you the one who has to do them?
For many business owners, creating consistent content—like sales emails, newsletters, or blog posts—is one of those tasks.
Yes, it’s vital for staying connected with your audience and bringing in revenue. But it’s also time-consuming as hell.
Now imagine what you could achieve if you weren’t spending hours staring at a blinking cursor or scrambling to meet content deadlines.
What if you could channel that energy into bigger, high-impact areas of your business—the ones that truly need you?
Free Up Your Time (and Your Mind)...
The good news is that you don’t have to do it alone.
I specialise in writing monthly content that not only keeps your audience engaged but also frees up your time to focus on the parts of your business that light you up.
With retainer packages for sales emails, newsletters, and blogs, I’ll take the content creation off your plate so you can:
Spend more time on the strategic, big-picture aspects of your business.
Focus your energy on the areas where you’re irreplaceable.
Stop stressing about what to write and when to write it.
If the idea of reclaiming your time sounds good, take a look at my retainer packages.
Let’s make 2025 the year where your energy goes exactly where it matters most.
Because running your business should feel lighter—not like a never-ending to-do list.
There’s No Magic in January
The magic of the new year isn’t in the date.
It’s in the quiet moments of reflection, the seeds you plant now, and the growth that happens when the time is right.
So, here’s my advice: ditch the New Year/New You bullshit.
Use this winter to reflect, dream, and rest.
And when spring comes, step into it with intention and joy.
Because life isn’t about resolutions.
It’s about seasons, cycles, and the little moments of magic we create every day.
Happy reflecting, and here’s to a bloody brilliant year ahead—on your terms.
