One wild year ago, I stumbled headfirst into an unexpected rollercoaster of an adventure.
Picture this: I'm a copywriter for Entrepreneursity, a game-changing platform cooked up by the dynamic duo of success, Michelle Stonhill and Emma Cooper.
Little did I know that this cosy writing gig would catapult me into the limelight of American national television on Fox TV and my life as a copywriter would never be the same.
Blame it all on Michelle and her call to arms for entrepreneurs to showcase their businesses in the “Women of Influence” segment on Fox TV.
At first, I shrugged it off. Who wants to hear a copywriter blabber on about their business? This gig was for coaches & people who really had an impact on the world.
But Michelle, always the optimist, saw me as the essential link for ‘authentic coaches and wellbeing practitioners’ who cringe at the thought of selling. So, I threw my hat in the ring, half expecting crickets.
Surprise, surprise… Michelle hit me up a few months later to spill the beans: my application was a smash hit. Cue the panic, because going live on Facebook is one thing, but national TV? In America? No way.
For the following months, I played a master game of denial. I kept this bombshell under wraps, not even telling my mates. Flights booked, hotel reserved, but it still felt like a bizarre dream until the prep sessions kicked in a few months later.
These sessions were designed to prepare us for the interviews. We needed to show up on brand and be confident in our questions. I was just starting to feel more comfortable, but then came a spanner in the works: I couldn't wear my signature green attire due to the obligatory green screen.
Universe, are you trying to tell me something?
Fast forward to October 30th. I’m flying to America. Mum guilt hits me hard, leaving my 3-year-old and juggling the weight of being a single mompreneur. The myth that running your own biz equals a stress-free family life? A laughable fantasy.
Self-awareness whispers in my ear, urging me to question the stories my mind spins. The guilt over leaving my kid behind? Real but not the whole picture. Three years of hard work, graft and sacrifice brought me here, even if the romanticised freedom of being an entrepreneur felt like pure fiction.
As a wordsmith, I know the power of language, and maybe that was my downfall. I'm tweaking answers on the plane, swimming in self-doubt. And then the interview day is a surreal mix of waiting, stressing, and desperately trying to recall rehearsed lines.
There’s no glam squad. We did our own hair and makeup. Yet, the sisterhood among the fellow entrepreneurs turned out to be the silver lining. Shared fears and mutual support turned a nerve-wracking ordeal into an incredible bonded journey.
Facing the massive green screen, my turn comes. Technical glitches add an unexpected dash of humour, cutting through the tension. Stumbling on the second question, I ditch the script and speak from the heart. The presenter acknowledges the depth, hinting that we could've chatted for an entire hour.
Post-interview, I'm a mix of exhilaration and exhaustion, realising the toll on my mind and body.
Surprisingly, I felt pretty damn good about it. Did it align with the meticulously planned interview in my head? Not a chance. But hey, I managed to come across as caring and genuine (or at least, I hope I did). And in the grand scheme of things, isn't that what really matters?
In the end, this wild ride from unemployed single mum dealing with post-natal depression to a copywriting TV star wasn't just a test of resilience. It was a crash course in embracing the unexpected, a lesson that detours can lead to the most profound discoveries.
And I want everyone to experience such a massive step out of their comfort zone; because this is where MASSIVE growth happens!
In fact, if you’re a “Woman of Influence” and want to share your work with the world, then take the step I did. The next round of applications for this experience is coming up soon, so keep an eye out for it on > Michelle’s socials.
Go on…live a little.
